Hurricane Matthew Causes Major Closures Throughout The State

Florida Schools Closing In Preparation Of Matthew

Florida schools are canceling classes along the Atlantic coastline and theme parks are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Matthew. Furthermore, Brevard County residents are being evacuated from barrier islands.

From Broward County to the Space Coast, where hurricane warnings are in effect, school officials have closed schools for the rest of the week. Some schools are sending students home early on Wednesday and after school activities are canceled.

Majority of colleges and universities in the warning area also have canceled classes starting as early as Wednesday evening.

List Of Closed Schools

Per WFLA and Wesh News, here are the schools that have already made closure announcements.

  • Palm Beach County Public Schools has notified the state that schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Martin County Public Schools has notified the state that schools will be closing early tomorrow and will remain closed Thursday and Friday.
  • St. Lucie County Public Schools has notified the state that schools will be closing at noon tomorrow and will remain closed Thursday and Friday.
  • St. Johns County Public Schools has notified the state that schools will closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • The Florida School for Deaf and Blind has notified the state that schools will closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Orange County Public Schools announced all schools, including campuses of Orange Technical College, will be closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Osceola County will have a normal school day on Wednesday and be closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Marion County will have a normal school day on Wednesday.
  • Brevard County will have normal school day Wednesday and be closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Sumter will resume as normal on Wednesday. Elementary schools dismiss at 12:00 p.m. Thursday. Secondary schools dismiss at 1:20 p.m. Thursday. All schools closed on Friday.
  • Volusia County normal Wednesday. Closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Flagler County After school events canceled Wednesday. Closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Pasco County schools will be closed on Friday.
  • Lake will have normal Wednesday. Closed Thursday and Friday.
  • UCF Cocoa & Palm Bay: Closed Thursday through Sunday. Main campus to decide on closings sometime Wednesday.
  • Florida Institute of Technology: Classes canceled beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday and normal operations suspended Thursday and Friday.
  • Seminole State College: All campuses will be closed from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
  • Polk County schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Seminole County schools are closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Hernando County schools will be closed Friday.
  • Citrus County schools will be closed Friday.
  • Pinellas County schools will be closed Friday.
  • Hillsborough County schools will be closed Friday.
  • Stetson University is closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Valencia classes are canceled Thursday through Sunday.
  • Keiser is closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Daytona State College is closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Everglade University classes are canceled Thursday and Friday.
  • Polk State College will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and reopen on Monday.

Schools Undecided

  • Hillsborough County schools will resume as normal on Thursday. By 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon a decision will be made about closures on Friday.

Airport Closures

  • The Orlando Sanford International Airport will cease domestic commercial flights at 1- a.m. Thursday. Internatioanl commercial flights will cease at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. By 8 p.m. Thursday it will be complete closed through Friday.
  • Fort Lauderdale International Airport announced plans to close at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
  • Miami International Airport announced they are monitoring Hurricane Matthew and noted “airlines don’t operate in sustained crosswinds of that exceed 35 mph- please expect cancellations on Thursday.” American Airlines flights have canceled most flights planned to depart from South Florida.
  • Jacksonville International Airport is advising customers to check their flights for cancellations before coming to the airport. American Airlines will have limited operations on the morning of Friday, Oct. 7th.
  • Tampa International Airport is listed as operating as normal, but has 21 cancellations and 9 delays. Their website will update throughout the day.TPA

Other Closures

  • SunRail will cease operations at 2 p.m. Thursday.
  • Court proceedings in Seminole, Volusia and Brevard counties have been canceled.
  • Walt Disney World will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday and be closed all day Friday.
  • Thursday night’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World has been officially cancelled.
  • Universal Studios will be closing at 5 p.m. Thursday with Halloween Horror Nights canceled Thursday night and closed Friday with Horror Nights canceled Friday night as well. The theme park hopes to reopen Saturday.
  • SeaWorld Orlando will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday and be closed on Friday. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
  • LEGOLAND Florida Resort will operate as normal on Thursday, but may close early due to weather. The park will be closed on Friday, but the hotel will be open for arriving guests.
  • Wet N’ Wild will be closed at 2 p.m. on Thursday and remain closed on Friday.
