Orlando, Fla is known for its attractions and nightlife and just recently was named the best warm destination for winter travel. But a new WalletHub study has some travelers thinking twice about visiting the Central Florida city as it was deemed the seventh least safe city in America.
As 2017 begins winding down, a look back on the year shows a high amount of cybercrime and mass shootings. With that in mind, WalletHub conducted a study to determine where Americans feel most protected against life’s hazards, including physical and nonphysical forms of danger. Analysts evaluated more than 180 U.S. cities acorss35 key metrics including assaults per capita to the unemployment rate to road quality.
The results weren’t as favorable for Florida as the state had three cities in the top 30 considered least safe.
Fort Lauderdale came in as the least safe city while Orlando followed at seventh and St. Petersburg at 27th.
The study found that Fort Lauderdale had the most traffic fatalities per capita. The city also tied with five other Florida cities as the city with the lowest percentage of households with emergency savings. The other cities tied for that were Tampa, St. Petersburg, Miami, Hialeah, and Pembroke Pines.
Orlando came in as the worst city for the ‘Home & Community Safety Rank,’ which rated the presence of terror attacks, forcible rapes per capita, thefts per capita, and more.
In 2016 Orlando was home to what was once the worst mass murder in U.S. history when a gunman opened fire on Pulse Nightclub killing 49. Since then the city has mourned and rebuilt from the terrible event.
