Jacksonville’s First Homicide Of The Year

Man Shot Is Jacksonville’s First Homicide Of The Year

On Sunday afternoon a man was shot to death resulting in Jacksonville’s first homicide of the 2017 year.

During the same shooting, which happened at East 19th and North Main Streets, another man was hospitalized.

Action News Jax reported that a neighbor said this was a drive-by shooting and that shots were fired towards a home where a group of people were.

“It’s sad, it’s sad; somebody lose(s) their life on the first day of the New Year,” neighbor Tony Bell said to Action News Jax.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is actively looking for at least one person involved with this shooting.

According to police, the victims were shot while standing in the street or on the sidewalk. Shell casings were found in the middle of East 18th Street and an apparent bullet hole could be seen in one of the nearby homes.

The homicide is the city’s first of the year after a total of 119 last year.

“We’re gonna do that whether it happened today or whatever day. We’re gonna do everything and put the efforts into solving all the homicides that occurred in Jacksonville and Duval County,” JSO Sgt. Chuck Ford said to Action News Jax.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the man wounded in the shooting is expected to survive, but police have yet to speak with him because he was in surgery.

Officers couldn’t confirm that this was a drive-by shooting.
