Toddler Dies After Being Pulled From Florida Pond

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — A toddler was pulled from a pond in a suburban Florida neighborhood shortly after being reported missing.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Albert Borroto tells news outlets report that divers found the child Sunday afternoon in pond behind the child’s home near Boca Raton. The child’s name and age have not been released.

Borroto says crews arrived in the neighborhood after getting a report of a missing child.

Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies are investigating.

No further details were immediately available.

Man Accused Of Breaking Into Trailer, Killed Ex-Roommate

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man is accused of breaking into a mobile home and killing his former roommate.

The News Herald reports 26-year-old Billy Herman Shaffer broke into the home while 48-year-old Matthew Kelley was at a convenience store early Saturday morning. Kelly was shot with his own shotgun when he returned home.

An arrest report says Shaffer called police after the shooting.

A neighbor told the newspaper that police had been called to the home about five weeks ago when Kelley was trying to get Shaffer out of his home.

Shaffer had an extensive criminal history of burglaries and thefts. He’s now accused of murder and armed burglary.

Records don’t list an attorney for Shaffer.

Police: Officer Hit During Traffic Stop, Fires At Suspect

ST. CLOUD, Fla. (AP) — A police officer shot at a driver who authorities say struck the officer with a car while fleeing a traffic stop in Florida.

News outlet report St. Cloud police say the officer tried to pull the driver over in a subdivision just after 12:15 a.m. Sunday, when the driver drove off, hitting the officer. Police say the officer fired toward the suspect’s car, hitting the driver’s side window and a nearby house.

In a release , the department says the suspect continued to drive recklessly before jumping from the moving car, which hit a parked car.

The suspect fled on foot, and remains at large. The department said on Twitter that the suspect has been identified.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

Police say they’ll compensate the homeowner for the property damage.
