Girl Dies In Car Crash While Heading To First Day Of School

MIRAMAR, Fla. (AP) — An 8-year-old Florida girl was killed during a crash on her way to her first day of school.

Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues says the child’s mother was driving to Somerset Academy, a charter school in Miramar, on Monday when she apparently ran a red light and was hit by a pickup truck.

Rues says Sumaiya Zahin was ejected from the minivan, which then rolled over on her. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. A toddler riding in a car seat was not harmed.

Police said the girl’s mother was taken to a hospital in fair condition.

No further details were immediately available.

Thief Grabs $30K In Cash And Jewelry As Man Pumps Gas

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — While a Florida man was pumping gas, a thief opened his front passenger door and got away with a bag containing $30,000 in cash and jewelry.

Lauderhill police have released a video in hopes of identifying the suspect in the Aug. 15 incident at the Chevron Gas Station.

The video shows Tomer Akerman of Aventura looking away from his vehicle as he pumped gas. A white Nissan Murano drives up and stops. A man jumps out and appears to crouch as he opened Ford Explorer’s door.

Police say Ackerman told them he was on the way to the Jewelry Exchange when the robbery occurred.

Florida Motel Bookkeeper Accused Of Taking $18,710 Deposit

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A woman who was training as a bookkeeper for a Florida beachfront motel is accused of taking off with the goods — $18,710 and her personnel file.

Daytona Beach police officers caught up with 32-year-old Laura Chadwick, arresting her Sunday on a grand theft charge.

Eszter Tuboly, a manager at the Sea Dip Beach Resort, said Chadwick had worked there for three to four weeks when she asked to make a deposit run.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the manager told police she didn’t feel comfortable letting Chadwick make the deposit on July 19 because she was a new employee. But her boss said she should.

Chadwick never returned to work, saying her mother had a stroke.

She told police she didn’t take the money.
