Suspect In Plant City Officer-Involved Shooting In Custody

A Suspect In A Plant City Officer-Involved Shooting Is In Custody

A suspect was taken to the hospital following an officer-involved shooting Friday night, said Plant City Police.

According to police, the incident began at 9:30 p.m. when police officers say they were called to a McDonald’s at 2001 James L. Redman Pkwy due to a large and hostile group.

Upon arriving to the scene, police say a man fired at least one round from a gun towards the directions of a police officer in full uniform and operating a fully marked police unit and who was there to investigate the disturbance.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, police say the suspect was Isaac Macher Thomas, 24, of Winter Haven.

After shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a white four-door sedan and the officer chased after him from Alexander Street to Reynolds Street. There the suspect attempted to turn eastbound onto Reynolds Street, but was unable to make the turn and traveled beyond the roadway and into a business plaza then crashed the vehicle into a dental office suite.

At that point the suspect tried to run away and authorities said a second PCPD officer, Sergeant James Burchett, arrived on scene and saw the suspect point a firearm at the officer. The officer became “fearful that his life was in imminent danger,” said a news release, and discharged his weapon at the suspect, said investigators.

The suspect was struck and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, said police.

The Plant City Police Department told WFLA that the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of several simultaneous investigations by the Plant City Police Department, The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office.

The first officer has not been identified yet.
