6-Month Memorial Held For Pulse Shooting Victims
On Thursday Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub announced it would be hosting a memorial marking six months since the worst mass shooting in U.S. history has occurred.
“Remembering Our Angels” was announced as an event on Pulse’s social media page.
On June 12th forty-nine people were killed and dozens were injured when gunman Omar Mateen opened fire inside Pulse nightclub. To remember those that were killed, the club will open at 1:45 a.m. Monday for candle lighting with a moment of silence at 2:02 a.m., the time the attack began.
At 5:30 p.m. on Monday Pulse will reopen for a memorial ceremony with local pastors scheduled to speak, and the Orlando Gay Chorus is scheduled to perform.
The announcement of the memorial comes days after Pulse owner Barbara Poma declined an offer from the city of Orlando to buy the nightclub to be turned into a memorial.
Roma said she plans to make the building a “sanctuary of hope” and a welcoming area where people can reflect on those affected by the tragic event.
Back in November the Orange County Sheriff’s Office released more than two hours worth of body cam footage from that night. The footage mostly came from the exterior of the nightclub.
Since the tragic event mourners have steadily visited the site bringing photos, notes, stuffed animals and other remembrances. Most of the items left have been collected for preservation by the Orange County Regional History Center.
Even businesses in the area are still mourning and remember those lost that night.
