A Hernando County woman was killed Tuesday when she was crushed by a homemade lift at a friend’s home.
Deputies say Margaret Harrison, 66, died when the elevator fell on her as she was visiting her friend, Jean Blair, who uses a motorized wheelchair.
Blair’s husband constructed the lift 17 years ago in the three-story home at 6263 Island Drive, Weeki Wachee, from a forklift, wood and welded metal. The couple told deputies it was maintained monthly and had not previously failed.
Officials with the Hernando County Building Department, who were called to the scene, say no permits were issued and deemed it illegal and unsafe due to dangerous electrical connections.
