Sudanese Woman Facing Death Penalty Gives Birth in Prison

death penalty for Meriam Yehya Ibrahim

A pregnant Sudanese woman who was sentence to death after she refused to renounce her Christian faith has given birth to a baby girl in prison. The woman, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, delivered her baby in a Sudanese prison on Monday. Meriam was sentenced to hanging earlier this month, but the court said it wouldn’t carry out the punishment until she gave birth. A judge had given her a period of time to renounce her Christian faith in order to be spared from the death penalty, but Ibrahim refused. She’ll be allowed to nurse the baby for two years before the sentence is carried out.
