Largo Man Asks Police To Shoot Him

LARGO — Police engaged in a 15-minute standoff early Monday with a suspect who reportedly asked officers to shoot him and repeatedly pressed a gun to his own head.

The man was not identified, but police said he was undergoing a mental health evaluation at Largo Medical Center on Monday morning. Officers responded shortly after midnight to 14531 Walsingham Road, after the suspect had walked into a neighbor’s apartment, allegedly intoxicated and saying he wanted police to shoot him, authorities said.

Officers reached the man by phone and eventually convinced him to come outside, The suspect allegedly carried a rifle and a handgun, prompting the 15-minute standoff.

According to police, the man pointed the gun at his head and asked officers to shoot him multiple times. When the suspect turned and looked like he was going back into his apartment, police used what they termed “a less lethal shotgun round” to subdue him.
