FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a woman rang in the new year by clinging to a channel marker and waiting for rescue in the waters off southwest Florida.

A Coast Guard Auxiliary crew on a routine patrol spotted the woman early Wednesday in the waters off Fort Myers Beach. She was clinging to a channel marker near the Matanzas Pass.

Officials say the woman went swimming late Tuesday off Bowditch Point Park and was swept away by the currents. She spent seven hours clinging to the channel marker.

The woman was taken to a hospital with signs of hypothermia.

Officials did not identify the woman.
