3 Arrested For Joyride With Purple Chicken

Three young men in Putnam County nabbed a chicken so big it would make Foghorn Leghorn jealous.

About 6 a.m. Tuesday a resident in the 200 block of East Florida 100 heard  some commotion and saw the three stealing the 9-foot, 600-pound chicken  statue.

The three hooked the chicken to a Chevrolet truck and dragged it a mile down  the road. Ben Smith told deputies that one of the thieves mounted and rode the  purple aluminum bird, the Sheriff’s Office said.

After that, they unhooked the chicken and flew the coop. Putnam detectives  found the young men the next day.

Darrin Luke Edwards, 19, was charged with grand theft and violation of  probation. Tyler Lee Jones, 21, and James Joseph Smith, 18, were charged with  grand theft.

Authorities returned the $2,300 chicken to Smith. However, during the  joyride, the big bird suffered a lacerated leg, a cracked claw and scarred  side.
