Florida’s two most-frugal gubernatorial candidates in Tuesday’s primaries are the one’s squaring off in the general election.

Gillum is seeking to become Florida’s first black governor. He edged out several Democrats in this week’s primary, including former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham.

Many had predicted 2018 would be "the Year of the Woman" in Florida.  Instead, it turned into the "Year of Party Extremes" -- a year when moderates fell, when both party bases flexed their muscles, when pollsters demonstrated a surprising fallibility in a political climate dominated by technology and social media.

Gillum is a true Progressive who was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont). He is for repealing the state's controversial Stand Your Ground law, Medicare for all and raising the minimum wage.

Sanders, a socialist who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and who has opened the door to another bid in 2020, threw his support to Gillum on Wednesday morning. 

With Sanders considering another presidential bid in 2020, two of the Our Revolution affiliates are backing state Rep. David Richardson in next month’s primary as Democrats look to flip the seat currently held by retiring U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla. Richardson has emerged as the chief rival in the Democratic primary to former U.S. HHS Sec. Donna Shalala who served as president of the University of Miami.
