MIAMI (AP) — U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has been raising his national profile through major policy speeches on the economy and America’s role in the world.
But immigration is one issue Florida’s freshman Republican doesn’t spend much time discussing. The son of Cuban exiles represents the state with the third-largest number of illegal immigrants.
His support of border security first and dealing with the nation’s more than 10 million illegal immigrants later stands in contrast to most of Florida’s other Cuban-American GOP leaders.
As his national stature grows, he will likely face more scrutiny on the issue. Despite his denials, he frequently gets mentioned as a possible vice presidential nominee next year. And if President Barack Obama beats the Republican nominee next year, Rubio could be viewed as a strong GOP 2016 contender.
