Fla. Spends Nearly $400K on Gambling Study

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Legislature is spending nearly $400,000 for a New Jersey company to do a comprehensive study on gambling.

Legislative leaders have signed a contract with Spectrum Gaming Group to provide two detailed reports in July and October. The company will also rely on professors in Harvard and the University of Florida to help out.

The expensive study could be critical in determining what steps Florida takes in the next year regarding gambling. The Legislature last year rejected bills that would have authorized large resort casinos in South Florida.

This year legislators approved a measure that shut downs storefront gambling operations known as Internet cafes in the wake of an ongoing scandal.

Florida also has a compact with The Seminole Tribe of Florida that gives the tribe exclusive gambling rights.
