Ex-Gov. Sanford seeks 2nd chance in South Carolina

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — One congressional candidate is a former Republican governor seeking redemption after his career imploded in a saga involving lies, the Appalachian Trail and an Argentine mistress.

His Democratic opponent is a famous comedian’s sister and a businesswoman who’s trying to help Democrats win a U.S. House district normally held by the GOP.

Mark Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert (KOHL’-buhrt) — whose brother Stephen is a Comedy Central star — are in a tight special election along South Carolina’s coast.

Sanford’s past and an aggressive ad campaign by Democrats have made Tuesday’s election difficult to predict.

National Republicans pulled advertising dollars after allegations emerged last month that Sanford trespassed at his ex-wife’s home on Super Bowl Sunday — something the ex-governor and former congressman disputes.
