Early Headlines For Holiday Shopping Season

The good news is that early reports point to a strong holiday retail sales period. According the Mastercard Spending Pulse, which tracks trends on credit card sales for indications of how things went, they see overall spending rising nearly 8% from last year.

A major driver, online shopping, which they say was up 20%. And Amazon a major benefactor, as not only did the online retailer report 3 million new Amazon Prime members, but also that it shipped a record number of items worldwide, with 70% of their customers using a mobile device to shop.

As far as items go, apparel started out slow due to warm weather, but there may be a late uptick. Fitbit was the most downloaded item in Apple’s app store Christmas day, and hoverboards were strong, but so were the reports regarding trips to the emergency room over the weekend (70), and the government is investigating at least 22 reports of the transport device bursting into flames.
