After Losing Streak, DOW Surges

After a six-day losing streak, U.S. stocks surged yesterday, helping to reverse some of the $500 billion in losses that were suffered. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index and the Dow Jones industrial average closed up nearly 4 percent, with the Dow gaining more than 600 points. Investors seemed to react to suggestions from a Federal Reserve official that policy makers may not raise interest rates soon.
