TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ A Tampa Bay area woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for poisoning an elderly neighbor and stealing from her.
A Hillsborough County judge sentenced 48-year-old Jana Porter Mallory on Wednesday.
She was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated abuse of the elderly.
Authorities say Mallory poisoned 79-year-old Peggy Mehrman over four months in 2007 and 2008 by giving the woman medications that exceeded 10 times her prescribed amount.
Meanwhile, Mallory was stealing jewelry and thousands of dollars in cash.
The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/ZHmid7 ) reports that Mehrman’s daughter became suspicious after not being able to withdraw money for funeral expenses from her mother’s account.
