West Palm Beach Doctor Could Get Prison

WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) _ A south Florida doctor who failed to pay nearly $6.4 million in taxes could face up to three years behind bars.

The Sun-Sentinel reports 57-year-old Dr. Krishna Tripuraneni, a gastroenterologist in a West Palm Beach suburb, will be sentenced Monday.

Tripuraneni was indicted in 2013 and began paying the money he owed the IRS before formally pleading guilty to federal tax evasion in January. The doctor admitted he understated his income by $18.1 million between 2004 and 2008.

Tripuraneni’s lawyer says he has already paid the $11,804,120.79 he owed the IRS in back taxes, interest and penalties.

Prosecutors tell the newspaper Tripuraneni should spend three years in prison. His defense hopes the judge will sentence him to probation and house arrest and allow him to continue working.
