The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby yesterday, saying that the company and others should not be obligated to pay for insurance-covered contraceptives if it violates the business’ religious beliefs. We talk about the implications of the ruling for businesses, if this is an issue of reproductive rights and how it could shape the future of healthcare covered by businesses. We also talk about what this means for the Affordable Care Act.
On a lighter note, the Monty Python Reunion Tour kicks off this month, with the remaining members coming together to perform a string of shows at London’s O2 arena. The first show sold out in a whopping 40 seconds! It features ten days of shows and the last show on July 20th, will be broadcast live to Python fans in movie theaters around the world. At 6:35 ABC News correspondent Tom Rivers joins us from London to talk about it.
President Obama said Monday that he’ll use his executive authority to curtail deportations of illegal immigrants and shift law enforcement resources to help the U.S. secure its border crisis. He tasked cabinet members to come up with executive actions that he can take regarding immigration reform and essentially told Congressional Republicans that if they won’t do anything regarding immigration reform, that he will. ABC News White House correspondent Ann Compton joins us at 7:10 to talk about it.
One of the things you can see in the Hobby Lobby case is that many supporters were Hobby Lobby customers, while those who opposed the store admitted to never shopping there. This reflects a new trend in retail, where consumers shop at stores and frequent brands that share their values. Kevin Paul Scott, founder of ADDO Worldwide and author of the book, 8 Essential Exchanges, joins us at 7:35 to talk about how our shopping habits and brand loyalties now reflect largely our political and social values.
Americans are paying more and more for life’s necessities, whether it be gas, clothing, food and housing, and for some, the price increases are startling. A researcher at Texas A&M has been studying the real costs of living in 2014 and put some numbers to it. ABC News correspondent Jim Ryan joins us at 8:10 to talk about the science behind how much we’re spending.
Team USA faces Belgium today at the World Cup. ABC News correspondent Scott Goldberg joins us at 8:25 to preview this second-round match with so much at stake. Belgium hasn’t reached the quarter finals since 1986 while the U.S. survived the treacherous “Group of Death.” You can watch the game at 4 on ESPN.
