Vehicle Registration Fees To Lower Sept. 1

TAMPA, FL – (August 13, 2014) – Effective September 1st, motorists will benefit from lower registration fees. Earlier this year Governor Scott signed legislation that resulted in cost savings for Florida motorists. The new legislation reduces most annual motor vehicle, mobile home and vessel registration fees. The annual savings to motor vehicle owners will vary as the amount due is based on the type of registration.

In an effort to save customers from paying their registration renewals at the higher rate, the renewal notices, which are typically mailed out 30 days prior to registration month, will be mailed out later than normal. Doug Belden, Tax Collector stated, “Mailing the September birth month renewal notices later than normal, with the new reduced fees, is the right thing to do. Our goal is to try and save our customers money whenever possible.” Motorists with a September birthday will be able to renew their registrations at the new rate starting Monday, September 1st online and Tuesday, September 2nd, in any of the Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s offices.

Registrations can be renewed at any of the tax collector branch offices, conveniently located throughout the county. However, to avoid longer wait times, the Tax Collector’s office encourages customers to renew online at www.hillstax.org. To get a renewal fee estimate, visit the Tax Collector’s website and click on the Motor Vehicle Fee Calculator located under Motor Vehicle Services. The new fee structure does not take effect until September 1st; therefore, if you mail your renewal early, we will hold your payment and process it on Tuesday, September 2nd. You will receive your decal within 3-5 business days.
