The state of Utah held their “Great Utah Shakeout” drill on Thursday, where the aim was for one million state residents to have registered to literally “drop, cover and hold” at exactly 10:15am, in preparation for the next seismic Big One to hit the state. It was billed as Utah’s largest earthquake drill, sponsored in part by FEMA and local state agencies. Utah averages a “6” magnitude earthquake every 15-20 years, a bigger one is considered long overdue, and 90% of its population live in areas where earthquakes can pose a significant danger. Other states and for that matter countries plan similar exercises.
