Two Jet Skiers Missing In Hernando

WEEKI WACHEE — Authorities continued to search early Monday for two men on a purple jet ski reported missing Sunday night, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The two men, both 22, departed from a private dock in Pine Island about 6 p.m. Sunday. By 10:45 p.m., they had not returned. The girlfriend of one of the men called the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, which contacted the Coast Guard.

The men do not have lights, flares, a radio or cell phone, the Coast Guard said, but reportedly have life jackets and a whistle.

A helicopter crew from the Coast Guard’s Clearwater air station, as well as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the sheriff’s office were on the water Monday morning searching for the men, whom authorities have not identified.

The jet ski had been purchased this weekend, authorities said.

No further information was immediately available.
