Tropical Storm Erika Develops in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Erika has formed in the central tropical Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center reported Monday night that Erika had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was centered 955 miles (1,535 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands.

Erika is moving west at 20 mph (31 kph), and while no current watches or warnings are in effect, forecasters say some watches may be required for a section of the Leeward Islands by early Tuesday.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 kms) from Erika’s center.
