British troops ended their combat operations in Afghanistan, handing over their Camp Bastion to Afghan control, as U.S. Marines handed over their adjoining military base, Camp Leatherneck, as well. By year’s end, Afghanistan and its newly installed president will be left to deal almost unaided with an emboldened Taliban insurgency.
