Teen Steals Car, Crashes During Pursuit

Winter Haven police have arrested a teen after he threatened a woman with a gun, stole her car and later crashed the stolen car.

According to an affidavit, the victim pulled into the 3 Brothers Mart at 223 Ave T NE on January 1 at 3:11 p.m. As she came out and went to her car, the suspect pulled out a black and silver hand gun and forced her out of the car.

Once she was out of her car, the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat and a second suspect got in the passenger seat and both fled heading south on 3rd Street NE. The victim then ran inside the store and called police.

On January 2, a police officer was conducting normal patrol in the area of 6th Street SW and Ave C SW when he spotted the victim’s car. As he attempted to stop the car, the driver failed to stop and after a lengthy pursuit with speeds that reached 125 mph, the driver crashed the car into a tree at Lake Howard Dr. SW and Ave A SW. The driver was then taken into custody. He did not sustain any injuries.

The teen said he knew it was wrong to steal the car but said “Sometimes I don’t be thinking.” According to the affidavit, he initially stated he just got into a running car and no one was in the car at the time. He later admitted a female was in the car and he told her to get out. He also denied being in possession of a firearm and that no one else was with him.

According to police, the suspect was released from juvy on December 19.
