Teen Hospitalized After Severe Crash

Clearwater police are investigating a crash that occurred late Monday.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. at Northeast Coachman and Belcher Roads, where a 2013 Prius that had been reported stolen ran a red light at the intersection and collided with a Honda Odyssey van.

The impact caused the Prius to flip. One occupant of the car, a female juvenile thought to be a passenger, was taken to the hospital for treatment of what were thought to be life-threatening injuries.

The 17-year-old originally was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg and then was transferred to All Children’s Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition.

The Prius was westbound on Northeast Coachman; the van was northbound on Belcher. Police say the Prius was reported stolen from 311 S. Betty Lane from a food delivery worker who had stopped at that location. He left the key in the ignition with the car running when it was stolen. The suspect who took the car was described as a black male in his late teens with a heavy build.

The two occupants of the Honda Odyssey van were not injured. The investigation continues. The intersection was closed to traffic for about two and a half hours.
