Teen Charged With Murder In October Drug Deal

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy Tuesday at LaBelle High School in LaBelle, Florida in connection to a murder back in October.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, David Nathan Garrett was arrested in the death of Donald J. Avery, 17, on the overpass at 34th Street in the 700 block on Oct. 11, 2014.

Police say that a passerby heard gunshots at 2:40 a.m. and investigated the incident. He called 9-1-1 after discovering the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Avery was transported to Bayfront Medical Hospital and was pronounced dead.

During investigation, detectives determined that Avery met Garrett at the overpass for a drug transaction. During their meeting, it is believed that Garrett pulled out a handgun and shot Avery “multiple times.” The motive is unclear.

Not long after the murder, after Garrett was initially questioned by detectives and denied involvement, he was moved out of St. Pete to La Belle by his family.

After Garrett’s arrest in LaBelle, his sister, 21-year-old Karissa Smock (pictured above), apparently called a witness in the case and threatened to kill him. She was arrested Monday and charged with Tampering with a Witness.

Garrett is being charged with first degree murder. Since he is a minor, News Talk Florida will not upload a picture.
