TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The University of South Florida’s TV station could soon be pulled from the air if top university officials decide to put its spot on the broadband spectrum up for auction.
The USF Board of Trustees will vote Tuesday afternoon on entering television station WUSF in the
auction, which could ultimately shut down the station in return for millions in payment to the university.
A Federal Communications Commission auction in April will allow TV stations nationwide to voluntarily sell or trade their broadcasting rights to free up space on the spectrum to serve the growing demand for wireless mobile devices.
TV stations that voluntarily enter the auction will have the option of sharing channels, switching to a lower quality channel, or forfeiting a broadcast license completely.
