Tampa Corrects Misspelling Of Historic Street

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa City Council has voted to correct the misspelling of one of its historic streets.

Council members on Thursday decided to change official street signs of Ybor (EE-bore) City’s main drag from La Setima to La Septima — correcting what they said has been a Spanish misspelling of Seventh Avenue.

The action comes three months before the Republican National Convention. Proponents of the name change worried that the misspelling would cause Tampa to be ridiculed by Hispanic tourists and delegates from California, Texas and Miami.

Ybor City is the historic Latin quarter near downtown that has been reborn as a tourist and entertainment district.

One member voted against the name change, saying it represented the Spanish that was spoken in Ybor City a century ago.
