Tampa Bay Spring-Breakers Could be Setting Records

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) _ Tourism officials in the Tampa Bay area this year’s spring break appears to be “setting records.”

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/H33410 ) reported Thursday that all signs point to success.

Traffic jams. Packed beaches. No vacancies at area hotels.

David Downing, the deputy director of Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater, says the final statistics won’t be in for a few months. But he says the clues are hard to miss.

Downing cited a number of reasons for the uptick in spring break activity, including marketing campaigns.

There has also been a lot of interest in events like the Honda Grand Prix races in St. Petersburg and the  “Spring Breakers” movie being filmed in the area.

The mild weather hasn’t hurt either.

Downing calls it a “string of very, very good luck”.
