Tampa Area Kindergartner Dies After Falling Ill

RUSKIN, Fla. (AP) _ Deputies say a 6-year-old boy collapsed and died shortly after falling ill at a Tampa area school.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon says Jose Maria Pinto-Rosa was in the lunchroom at Cypress Creek Elementary School in Ruskin about 11 a.m. Wednesday when he told an employee he felt sick.

The child was taken to the nurse’s office.

According to deputies, the boy collapsed and school officials called 911.

The kindergartner was taken to South Bay Hospital where he died a short time later.

McKinnon says there was no indication the child had any contagious medical condition.

He says witnesses saw some symptoms that might explain the boy’s sudden death but he did not release details.

An autopsy is planned.

The sheriff’s office is conducting a death investigation.
