Sunrail Expansion Derailed By Uncle Sam

DELAND, Fla. (AP) _ The federal government has announced it will not allocate $35 million to SunRail for the expansion of a train system.

The Orlando Sentinel reports U.S. Rep. John Mica confirmed Thursday that the federal government would not help cover the costs.

Leaders of SunRail and Volusia County were hoping that the federal grant would help expand the train system 13 miles north to DeLand in Volusia County.

Volusia and the state, which operates SunRail, were hoping the grant would cover half of the $70 million needed for the expansion.

Rep. Mica says he is trying to organize a meeting in DeLand on Nov. 10 with Volusia and SunRail officials to come up with a new plan.
