St. Pete Sewer Pipes May Get Upgrades

St. Petersburg’s aging sewer system could get some much-needed repairs.

A city council committee has voted unanimously to spend $1.5 million out of the city’s BP oil spill settlement payout on upgrades.

Hopes are to avoid anymore large spills like the one that left 31 million gallons of wastewater in Boca Ciega and Tampa Bays.

And the committee signaled it would consider approving more of the $5 million left in settlement money for more sewer system repairs depending on how dire a study coming out soon says the situation is.

Wastewater officials have been asking for $15 million immediately for sewer system upgrades.
