MIAMI (AP) _ Six people have been sentenced in South Florida to lengthy prison terms for their roles in a massive tax refund fraud scheme.
Prosecutors said Monday the scam involved more than 380 tax returns filed by at least 180 people in 30 states.
The total refunds sought by the fraudulent returns was more than $160 million.
Michael Beiter was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, and David Clum got almost the same sentence.
They were convicted in October of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and multiple counts of filing false tax returns.
The others got between three and 15 years in prison.
The scam involved payment of a $750 fee to have false tax returns filed, with the refund to be shared.
Most clients got no share of the refund.
