Seminole County Deputy Involved In Shooting

WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) _ A central Florida sheriff’s deputy was shot in the ankle by a suspect who also was shot in an exchange of fire at a busy intersection.

Seminole County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dennis Lemma said Thursday the deputy is expected to survive.

Lemma says deputies had been pursuing Christian Joy, 21, and a female passenger in a car that matched one believed to be involved in a series of home burglaries.

When the vehicle crashed into another vehicle at the busy intersection, Joy and passenger got out of the vehicle.

Lemma says the driver started firing at deputies, and one of the deputies was shot in the ankle. Deputies fired back.

Joy is being treated for gunshot wounds and is listed in critical condition. His passenger also was arrested.

Joy is being investigated for attempted homicide.
