Suspect Brings Baby Along To Robbery

A man had his 5-month-old son with him as he tried to rob a home in St. Petersburg, police say.

Corey James Earl Mathews, 22, was standing in a home on 9th Street North holding his baby son in a car carrier while his accomplice attempted to break in through the back door and that’s how the homeowner found them, according to the St. Pete Police Department.

The accomplice took off after Matthews yelled to warn him about the homeowner and Matthews just walked away. The homeowner called 9-1-1 and tried to stop Matthews, who put his son down, pulled a knife and the homeowner left him alone.

Police later caught up with Matthews and arrested him on 4th Street North. He had the baby with him and the knife on him, according to detectives.

He is in jail on charges of on charges of residential burglary, aggravated assault, child neglect and violation of probation (for battery on a officer). His 5-month-old is in custody with the mother. The other burglar has been identified but is not charged as of yet.
