St. Petersburg New Parking Meters

Next time you have to use a parking meter in St. Petersburg, be on the look out for the newest parking meters that will be donating the change to homeless shelters. WLFA 8 reports, “The city is converting about a dozen meters into bright yellow donation stations. The money will go to support homeless programs around the city.” In addition the news station reports the idea was based off of a program in Denver called “Denver’s Road Program.” The Denver program is reported to bring in thousands of dollars to their homeless shelters. One of those reasons is because there are “meters at the airport which bring in more money” WFLA 8 writes.

The Tampa Bay Times writes, “[Mayor Rick] Kriseman noted that shortly after he took office in January, an annual point-in-time survey counted 5,887 homeless individuals in Pinellas County, including about 2,500 children.

With this wonderful idea, it will give people comfort knowing that their money is going to a good cause.  The idea gives us smiles and hopes that this will help more people get off the street and onto better lives.
