St. Pete Police Chief Receives Fake Check As Scam

St. Petersburg Police are warning people of scams involving fake checks. They say that these scams usually instruct the victim to deposit the check and send a “fee” to a particular address, usually overseas.

According to police, they receive reports of this kind of scam several times a week.

St. Petersburg Chief of Police received a check for $2,450.00, addressed to him at Police Headquarters. The Chief was suspicious and the Economic Crimes Unit verified it was a fake check, despite its authentic appearance.

Police want the public to know that if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.

An Economic Crimes detective is available for interviews between 10:30-11:30 at the PIO office, St. Pete Police Headquarters, 1300 1st Ave. N.
