Prescribed Burn Planned at Port St. Lucie Park

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) _ Almost 40 acres of pine flatwoods will be burned at a state park in Port St. Lucie.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Savannas Preserve State Park will conduct the prescribed burn Wednesday.

State fire officials say prescribed burns mimic natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire.

Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
