Polar bear cub orphaned in Alaska lands at NY zoo

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A polar bear cub that was orphaned and rescued by a hunter in Alaska has arrived in western New York, where it will have a playmate at the Buffalo Zoo.

Kali (KUL’-ee) arrived at the Buffalo airport early Wednesday on a UPS flight.

Buffalo Zoo President Donna Fernandes was on hand to greet the nearly 5-month-old cub and its handlers from the Alaska Zoo.

In time, Kali will be introduced to the zoo’s polar bear cub, Luna, a visitor favorite.

The Buffalo Zoo is in the final stages of fundraising for a new $18 million polar bear exhibit.

Kali is expected to stay for about six months, but the zoo hopes Kali can be a permanent resident.

That decision will be up to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
