Panhandle Deputy Shot While Pursuing Suspects

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) _ An Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the leg while pursuing two robbery suspects in Pensacola’s upscale Scenic Hills neighborhood.

Officials say Sgt. Shedrick Johnson and other deputies responded to a robbery in progress call Wednesday night.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/14e6krH ) reports Johnson underwent surgery and was in serious but stable condition late Wednesday.

Scenic Hills resident John Scott said he saw the injured deputy in his neighbor’s driveway.

Scott says deputies were asking for belts to help stop Johnson’s bleeding.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Rhonda Ray says “shots were exchanged” as the deputies responded to reports of the burglary.

The suspects were caught at the scene and were in custody Wednesday night.

Further details about the robbery and shooting have not been released.
