One Dead In North Port Police Shooting

Guns_2013NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — One person is dead after an altercation with a police officer who was investigating a suspicious vehicle parked along a road in North Port.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports the incident happened shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. The police officer stopped to inspect the vehicle, which was parked in a largely undeveloped area near Interstate 75.

A moment later, the officer radioed dispatchers to report “shots fired.” Additional police officers raced to the scene.

The newspaper reports that a person in the vehicle displayed some type of weapon when the officer approached. The officer wasn’t injured.

No further details were immediately available.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting.
