TULSA, Okla. (AP) — With summer approaching and temperatures getting warmer, Oklahoma health officials are warning residents to take precautions against diseases carried by mosquitoes and ticks.
The Tulsa Health Department says West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. In some cases the illness can be fatal, and its symptoms often include fever, headache, dizziness, and muscle weakness.
Residents should remove standing water and take precautions against being bitten, especially during dawn and dusk.
Officials say it is important to do a full-body check for ticks after being in the outdoors, including the backyard. Prompt removal of attached ticks can prevent some infections.
