Off-Duty Corrections Officer Shot Outside South Dade Home

An off-duty corrections officer is in stable condition after being shot outside his home Friday night during an armed robbery.

Juan Guellmes, a 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, was cleaning his car at his home near Southwest 184th Street and 108th Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. when several armed men approached and shot him multiple times, according to police.

The officer was airlifted to Kendall Regional Trauma Center, where he had surgery on Friday night.

Velez-Martinez said that the suspect was able to steal a chain around Guellmes’ neck.

He is set to have surgery again on Sunday.
