North, South Korea Exchange Artillery Fire

South Korea lobbed dozens of artillery shells over the De-militarized Zone (DMZ) between them and North Korea on Thursday according to the Yonhap News Agency.

The artillery fire from the South came in retaliation from a similar action by the North.

“A barrage of supposedly North Korean military shells was detected by (South Korea’s) anti-battery radar,” a South Korean ministry official told Yonhap. The incident took place at 3:52 pm Korean time.

The North apparently attempted to barrage a set of loudspeakers blaring propaganda across the border. North Korea has often threatened war over these loudspeakers as they consider them provocative. The loudspeakers were mounted by the South as retaliation for a landmine incident that killed two South Korean soldiers earlier this month.

As the American military continues to downsize and disappear from the world scene, more and more of these episodes from rogue states are beginning to pile up.

Current State of Global Conflict

1. ISIS controls large parts of the Middle East from Syria and Iraq to Libya.

2. Russia invaded the Crimea during the Sochi Olympics and has its eyes on the Ukraine.

3. China is building man-made islands in the South China Sea. These islands will act as aircraft carriers for the Chinese military.

4. North Korea and South Korea have been on knife’s edge for more than 50 years. North Korea, still under heavy economic sanctions, has been ignored with everything else going on in the world. As China’s economy falters and the Russians focus on the Ukraine, will the hermit nation scream for international attention?
