New Home Building Rule Debated In St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg city council is deciding today whether to force new homes in flood-prone parts of town to be built one foot higher.

Making that a law could be good news for those homeowners in the long run, because it may make them eligible for lower flood insurance rates.

It would also enhance the city’s rating in the national flood insurance program.

City officials say recent record flooding in places like Pasco County and scientific studies that confirm rising sea levels due to climate change got them thinking about how to proactively preserve property and save money.
