New Details on St. Petersburg’s New Pier

During yesterdays St. Petersburg City Council meeting, the architect of the future Pier, Michael Maltzen, gave more details on the new “Lens” design.Maltzen talked with the Pier Advisory Task Force, giving specifics on his design.

He explained how the sweeping canopy is designed to resemble sails on a ship and to capture the movement of sunlight and water, creating a sense that the Lens is animated.

Maltzen also gave more details about the clear water reef planned for the center of the lens and how they would cultivate 2.5 acres of sea grass and oyster beds to clear the water and attract a variety of aquatic life like more fish, turtles and perhaps, eventually, even manatees.

People are also expected to use The Lens canopy because there would be several observation decks and also a larger space on top for events, such as weddings.
