More Travel-Related Zika Cases In Florida

TALLAHASSEE – Florida health officials say they’ve reported six new travel-related cases of the Zika virus to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Florida Department of Health reported in a news release today that two cases were reported in Miami-Dade County, two cases in Hillsborough, two cases in Lee and one case in Santa Rosa.

All of the cases were believed to be contracted outside of the state. Florida has reported a total of nine travel-associated cases to the federal government.

None of the cases involve pregnant women.

Zika fever illness is generally mild with a rash, fever and joint pain.

CDC researchers are examining a possible link between the virus and unborn babies exposed during pregnancy.
